Offers trained volunteer counselors who provide crisis telephone counseling, information and referrals. All calls are strictly confidential, and counselors are sensitive to needs of adolescents, elderly, minority groups and individuals with HIV/AIDS. English, Spanish, Cantonese.
  • SAMHSA's National Helpline This is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.

Comprehensive list of Alameda substance use treatment clinics/residential programs

  • West Oakland Health Council (Website) has several substance abuse treatment services, at their West Oakland Health Center and East Oakland Health Center sites. There are four programs, with residential, non-residential, methadone maintenance, and also services for pregnant and post-partum women.
  • Axis Community Health (Website). Can call 925-462-1755 for an appointment, offers outpatient services for teens and adults.
  • Alta Bates Chemical Dependency Program (Website). Can call (510) 652-7000 —>24/7 number of complete online form. Offers comprehensive chemical dependency treatment and ongoing support and counseling to family and friends. Most private insurances and sliding scale.
  • Harm Reduction Therapy Center (Website). 315 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94607 415-863-4282. Client-therapist collaboration that combines substance abuse treatment with psychotherapy.
  • Cherry Hill Detox (Website). 2035 Fairmont Drive, San Leandro, CA 84578. Call 866-866-7496 for 24/7 crisis support, assessment of services and referrals. Consists of a sobering unit and a detox unit.
  • BAART programs (Oakland). 510-533-0800, at 1124 International Blvd., Oakland CA 94606. Does drug treatment, methadone treatment, and rehab services. Accepts Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, sliding scale low cost fee.
  • Lifering. Offers recovery groups from alcohol and/or drug addictions. Believes in self-empowerment and is not based in spirituality or religion. Available in multiple locations. Go to for meeting locations and times.
  • Berkeley Addiction Treatment Services Can call (510) 644-0200. Provides substance use treatment, detoxification, and methadone maintenance and detoxification. 2975 Sacramento St Berkeley, CA 94703. Accepts most insurance plans but can provide payment assistance (sliding fees scale) based on income.

  • BAART programs (Antioch, Richmond). Drug treatment, methadone treatment, rehab services. Accepts Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, sliding scale low cost fee.

San Francisco

  • Westside Community Services offers methadone maintenance and detoxification programs. Includes vocational counseling, referral to medical treatment and education counseling. "Westside is focused on serving African Americans and other underserved populations, those with prior diagnosis of mental illness, substance users, and those with limited financial resources."   • HealthRIGHT 360 provides outpatient and can link to inpatient services (Walden House) for people with substance use disorders. Will work with clients to find funding (e.g. help with Medi-Cal and other benefits). You can drop-in at 1735 Mission St., San Francisco or you can call (415) 746-1940.
  • Homeless Youth Alliance Provides resources for homeless youth with substance use disorders. Works to empower homeless youth to protect themselves, educate each other, reduce harm in the community, and transition off the streets. Alameda County List of Resources. The eligibility described says pregnant or women with children, but this does not seem to be true.
