Assisters programs help enroll clients into Covered California to get health insurance.

Covered CA

Covered California is the only place to get assistance buying private insurance from companies. You may also qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program.

  • Ann Chandler Public Health Clinic (Website) Ann Chandler assists individuals and families with Medi-Cal/Healthy Families or Kaiser’s Child Health Plan applications. They also process “Sensitive Services” Medi-Cal applications for anyone under 21 years of age who has a need for family planning, pregnancy-related or STI-related care.

For Covered CA assistance call (510) 981-3236 for appointment or drop-in, 2nd Thursdays 10:30 am - 1:00 pm.

  • Berkeley Free Clinic Berkeley Free Clinic has its own assister's program that runs from November through January during open enrollment!
  • Lifelong Medical Care (Website) Lifelong will help patients sign up for healthcare insurance. Call (510) 981-4100 for more information. Warning: Process may take a couple months to become a Lifelong member!

Medi-Cal

You can always enroll for Medi-Cal! This can be done through Covered California (assisters program above), through the online Medi-Cal application, in person, or by mail. There's a Medi-Cal Client Advocate, reachable at (510) 383-2898 for FREE help with your Medi-Cal application.

The two Medi-Cal insurances that exist in Alameda County are Alameda Alliance for health, and Anthem Blue Cross. However, not everyone is required to enroll in these health insurance plans- instead, you may have "Regular Medi-Cal"

  • Alameda Social Services (Website) Apply for Medi-Cal at one of the Alameda Social Services facilities where you can apply in-person for Medi-Cal, Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 5pm. You can also contact the Medi-Cal Client Advocate at (510) 383-2898 for FREE help with your Medi-Cal application.

HealthPAC

HealthPAC isn't insurance, but a health payment program. Best for those who can't afford health insurance or who are undocumented. Most Alameda community clinics are a provider of HealthPAC.

Pregnancy Insurance

There are a number of health insurance programs that cover pregnant women. The programs differ based on income and citizenship. County clinics and hospitals, and some community clinics, will enroll you into the appropriate program.
